119 Fish...

119 Fish...

[caption id="attachment_402" align="alignright" width="150" caption="21,256 dead fish"]vs 21,256 fish[/caption]

According to the latest government figures, observed human predation has claimed the lives of more than 21,000 Chinook salmon. Sport fishermen alone killed more than 16,500 salmon. Another 3,109 Chinook were caught and released by sport fishermen, presumably because their adipose fins were not clipped, meaning that they were probably wild fish. Of those, a very conservative government estimate suggests that 10% will die after being released, as a direct result of handling. (A more accurate estimate is probably closer to 20%, but let’s just use the government’s figures for this.) This means that, of the wild salmon who were caught and released by sport fishermen, at least 311 of them can be expected to die as a result of the trauma associated with the sport fishing industry. (Or 622 if we use the 20% figure that some suggest would be more accurate. But let’s just go with the government’s numbers.)

“Thomas,” Named by the Children of Alberta Street

Basking on their Native River

Basking on their Native River

Recently, the children of Alberta Street gave the sea lion branded C699 a new name: They christened him “Thomas.” Thomas gained notoriety earlier this month, when the government initially announced that he had been trapped at Bonneville. Instead, though, the animal whom they had trapped was C669, and NOT C699. Alas, C669 was subsequently put to death by the ODFW, injected with poison into his veins on the banks of the river that was home to him. But Thomas remains free in his native waters on the Columbia, and now he has a new name, thanks to the kids of Alberta Street.

Hank

A Special Friend

I met someone over the weekend, and I want you to meet him too. I’m not sure whether words can really introduce you to this remarkable being, but words will be the bridge I will try to build between us, between the theory and the reality of who the sea lions really are. I met Hank at the mouth of the Columbia, basking in the sun near a row of fishing boats. I started calling him Hank because he reminds me of a certain dog I know — same color, same facial expressions, same bark. And there’s something else that Hank the sea lion has in common with Hank the dog — each one in his own way has chosen to bestow upon me a deep trust that I don’t know how I earned, and that feels like a miraculous gift.

Lower Columbia Monitoring Report: Gill Nets and Anglers

Dragging Gill Nets

Dragging Gill Nets

On Saturday, April 18, several brigadiers went out to the river. Recent reports from the government indicated that anglers had killed more than 8,000 salmon in the lower Columbia, and that as a result, fewer than 800 fish had actually made it to the dam’s fish counters. The fishermen, on the other hand, are claiming that the sea lions are to blame for the salmon crisis. So we went out to see what was happening on the river this past Saturday. What we saw was truly shocking, even to us. The river was once again so crowded with anglers that one could have walked across the water on them in places. But this time, we also saw so many gill nets on the river that it was astonishing.

Sea Lion Road Trip Report Back

Capitol Steps

Capitol Steps

What a great day it was for standing up for the sea lions! With the sun shining on us, animal advocates packed the bus called Cool and headed down to Salem on Thursday. We came from all over Cascadia — from Portland, from Eugene, from St Helens, from Colton, from Beavercreek, and from other communities across Oregon. As there was only supposed to be room for 25 on the bus, we had to squeeze together close to fit 30 on board, and others had to make their own way there in separate cars. We went down to the capital to make our voices heard on behalf of some of the most oppressed residents in all of Cascadia. We went to speak up for the sea lions of the Columbia.

Girod Salmon Plan

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Oregon state senator Fred Girod is busy promoting the killing of sea lions and cormorants in this state. Above, you hear a few of his thoughts on this issue. Let’s look a little more closely, though, at what he gets right, and what he gets very, very wrong.

Voracious Fishermen Kill more than 8000 Salmon Already This Season

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

In only the first four days of April, fishermen killed a whopping 4,327 Spring Chinook. This is more than a thousand fish per day, and importantly, it is more salmon than the sea lions are accused of killing at Bonneville dam all year long. This, in fact, is more salmon than the sea lions are dying for eating. Add to this the 3,940 fish that were killed by human fishermen in March, and you get more than 8,000 dead salmon already, killed by human hands… and the run is only just beginning. (Keep in mind that this is only the legal, officially counted kill. The number may actually be much higher.)

IDA Sues State Agency to Save Willy the Sea Lion

Beautiful, Intelligent, Gregarious Animals

Author: Matt Rossell, In Defense of Animals

Last week, In Defense of Animals (IDA) took the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) to court seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent Willy, a California Sea Lion branded C657, from being killed. Advocates have named this sea lion after the famed Killer Whale, Keiko, from the movie “Free Willy.” The state agency has the wrong sea lion without authorization, which is just one more mistake in a growing pattern of government blunders since the states of Washington and Oregon received special federal permission to kill up to 85 sea lions per year who are seen eating salmon.

Easter for the Sea Lions

Greeting the New Day

Greeting the New Day

The following was posted on Portland Indymedia back in 2007. It seemed somehow appropriate to post it here today. For the original, and the associated comments, see http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2007/04/357259.shtml.

Tomorrow is Easter, a day to celebrate the turning of the wheel, from decay to resurrection, from winter to spring, from death to life. And in a fitting salute to this ancient Pagan (yes! Pagan!) holiday, the runs are here: The salmon are pulsing through the river again. Life comes surging into the world again with the spring. And with it come the sea lions, gliding through the water with the salmon, as they have for thousands of years.
I can hear them from my window here, barking and trumpeting from the waters as they lounge along the shore, as they gleefully swirl through the water, as they break the grey-green, splashing surface with their whiskered, dog-like faces. I counted four of them this morning, as I walked along the shore. This is good. This is how the spring goddess comes dancing back into the world: She comes with bright blossoms and soft petals and perfumed air. She comes with singing birds and unfurling fronds and awakening earth. And, here in Cascadia, she comes with the salmon and the sea lion.
