C674 “Hershey,” named in honor of Governor Kulongoski’s dog. Hershey has been killed, as of May 15, 2009.

C697 Added to the kill list March 16, 2010, guilty of the crime of eating 10 fish. Dead. Killed on April 6, 2010 for eating 10 fish. We believe this might have been Solo, an animal who cried on the shore and refused to eat or even to move for days in the week preceding this trapping. Solo began mourning on the day that two other animals – C805 and C934 – were trapped and killed. He has not been seen nor heard since C697 was trapped.

C699 (“Thomas,” named by the children of Alberta Street. Erroneously identified by State as being captured on April 1, 2009, but in reality he is still free, at least for now.

C700 Captured and sent to prison, March 18, 2009.

C706 “Jack Sparrow” (Named by students of St Helens High School.)

C739 Captured and sent to prison in 2008. Formerly known as B136. (But unlike Willy, he was actually designated in records as having been known as B136 before he was branded.)

C779 Added to the death list on May 3rd, 2010.

C795 (Known before branding as B281. Added to death list on April 13th, 2009.)

C796 “Bourne” (Named by students of St Helens High School)

C797 “Oscar Wilde” (Named by students of St Helens High School)

C805, formerly B208. “Avatar” (Named by students of St Helens High School) Avatar is dead. He was hauled away and killed by the ODFW on March 30, 2010.

C841 – Dead. Added to the kill list on May 18th, 2010 for the crime of eating 3 fish. Or, in the jargon of the NOAA letter adding him to the list, “Observed in the tailrace of the dam on 5 days in 2010 with 3 documented salmonids consumed.” Killed for those three fish on May 26th, 2010.

C858 (Added to death list on April 13th, 2009, for eating TWO fish.) C858 has been killed for the crime of eating two fish, as of May 15, 2009.

C881 Added to the death list on May 3rd, 2010 for the crime of being seen eating 5 fish.

C926 killed by the State

C927 “Les” (Named by St Helens high school students) Formerly known as B283. Added to hit list on May 19, 2009 for eating 31 fish over a two year period.

C928 Dead. Added to the hit list on May 19, 2009. Executed by the state on August 24th, 2009, for eating NINE fish.

C930 Added May 3rd, 2010, for the crime of eating 8 fish.

C934 “Rick Hargrave” (Named after ODFW apologist for the killing. We thought maybe having an animal named after him might give him a little empathy.)(Our apologies to the sea lion Ricky.) Added to the list on December 9, 2009 for allegedly eating THREE salmon. This animal was previously identified as B300. Rick Hargrave is dead. He was hauled away and killed by the ODFW on March 30, 2010, while his namesake was conveniently “out of the office until April.”
C961 Added to the kill list May 3rd, 2010.

C971 Added May 3rd, 2010, found guilty of eating THREE fish.

C00 “Freddy” Named by a fifth grade student at Trillium school. Added to the kill list on March 16th, 2010, for the crime of eating SIX fish. (The ODFW said that they would only kill “the worst offenders” at the dam. Six fish.) Freddy is dead. Put to death on May 4th, 2010 for eating fish.

U18 (They have branded more than a thousand sea lions, and are now turning to U brands rather than C brands, in the hope of telling the difference. The “U” is the “C” branding iron turned on its side.) This animal has been added to the kill list on May 3rd, 2010, for the crime of eating 8 fish.

Non-branded:

B2

B9

B22

B31 (Newly added after being observed eating ONE FISH.)

B32

B40

B46

B47 (On list for eating FOUR fish.)(aka B221… wow. We can really have faith in their ability to individually identify sea lions, when they keep accidentally tracking the same animal as two separate animals….)

B63

B66 (Captured in 2008, sent to prison.)

B81

B88

B97

B100

B108

B127 (Status Unknown. The State claims that this is sea lion C657, who is in state custody. However, they did not come up with this story until SLDB notified them that C657, “Willy,” is NOT on their hit list, even though they had initially said that he was. We think they lied to cover their behinds. If so, then B127 is still free and hopefully always will be.)

B130

B132

B194 Dead. Killed by ODFW on March 9th, 2010.

B198 (Dead. Died in state custody in april of 2008, after being mis-treated and
then anesthetized too long.)

B204

B214

B216 Dead. This animal was subsequently identified as C579, who was killed with his lifelong friend, C578, in April of 2009.

B220

B221 (aka B47)

B254 (Added to death list on April 13th, 2009)

B258 (Added to death list on April 13th, 2009) Dead. Killed by ODFW on March 9th, 2010.

B265

B267 Dead. Killed by ODFW on March 9th, 2010.

B285/B56/B272 (Notice that this animal has THREE SEPARATE IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS. The animal is unbranded, and although the State claims that their student observers can accurately identify “problem” sea lions, this animal was referred to by three separate ID numbers over a period of years.)

B295 (Added to the death list on April 13th, 2009)

B296 (Added to the death list on May 19, 2009)

B297 (Added to the death list on May 19, 2009)

B298 (Added to the death list on May 19, 2009)

B299 (Added to the death list on December 9, 2009, for allegedly eating 13 salmon.)

B301 Added May 3rd, 2010. (The State claims that their student observers, most without any prior experience with sea lions, and after less than a week of training, are able to individually identify more than 300 unbranded animals.)

B307 Added May 3rd, 2010, after being found guilty of eating 5 salmon.

B308 Added May 3rd, 2010, for the crime of eating 9 fish.

B317 – Added to the kill list on May 18th, 2010 for the crime of eating fish. As Barry Thom, the Acting Regional Administrator with NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service stated in the letter adding this animal to the kill list, “Observed in the tailrace of the dam on 6 days in 2010 with 18 documented salmonids consumed.” (That’s government jargon for, “This sea lion eats fish and therefore must be killed so that the fishermen can kill more fish.”)

B318 – Also added on May 18th, 2010. Says Thom, “Observed in the tailrace of the dam on 5 days in 2010 with 23 documented salmonids consumed.” (I think he’s actually just quoting Army Corps of Engineers fish biologist Robert Stansell here.)

B325 – Added May 18th, 2010, for eating TWO fish. Again, Thom: “Observed in the tailrace of the dam on 7 days in 2010 with 2 documented salmonids consumed.”

Branded elsewhere:

3341
4140
5490 – Added to the kill list May 18th, 2010, for eating four fish. IN government parlance: “Observed in the tailrace of the dam on 8 days in 2010 with 4 documented salmonids consumed.”

Important Note: On 4/1/2009 C657 was trapped at Bonneville Dam. This animal was identified to us by Rick Hargrave of the ODFW as being a targeted animal. However, C657 is NOT on the list of animals authorized for “removal.” The ODFW has the wrong animal in custody. Four other animals trapped at the same time have been killed. Willy and Sanctuary Sam have been incarcerated for life.
